Mercado la Paloma

Mercado la Paloma

Economic Empowerment—and a Range of Culinary Delights!

A 35,000 square-foot former garment factory located in what was once an area characterized by urban blight and food scarcity, Mercado La Paloma provides food options that defy expectations of what a South LA dining experience should be.

Since its doors opened in 2001, the modern-day market and sustainable economic development arm of the nonprofit Esperanza Community Housing Corporation has hosted a culturally diverse mix of mom-and-pop food entrepreneurs who receive the support needed to flourish. As home to delicious Ethiopian, Thai, Oaxacan, Yucatec and Belizean cuisine over the years, the Mercado has become a coveted destination for locals seeking a taste of home, as well as far away visitors in search of a foodie adventure. The food is so good that even the esteemed Michelin Guide has taken notice.

Esperanza’s Executive Director, Nancy Ibrahim, says, “We offer hospitality to everyone, but on South Central’s terms,” a sentiment reflected in not only the restaurants but also the organization’s commitment to lifting up South LA arts and culture. Exhibits and cultural celebrations are regularly presented in the communal dining hall, and local creators often rent day tables to test their products on lunch crowds.

From their incredible food vendors to well-attended arts programs, Mercado la Paloma is an oasis of traditional food, culture and community that more than fulfills the vision of the late founder, Sister Diane Donoghue, a passionate champion of the community she called home. This dynamic hub and beloved South LA institution, buzzing daily with activity, is a testament to her spirit and a true example of community investment in action.
